Good evening ladies and gentleman, On behalf of Toyota and Lexus, welcome to the 27th annual Environmental Media Awards! Tonight we are honored to serve as presenting sponsors and celebrate the 17th anniversary of our partnership with the Environmental Media Association. Over the past 17 years, we’ve helped honor the thought leaders that inspire millions to lead more environmentally conscious lives. Tonight we continue to celebrate the efforts of the entertainment industry and celebrities that shape our culture. After all these years, we are still inspired by EMA’s efforts to promote environmental awareness using the powerful medium of entertainment. Tonight we’ve brought an inspiring vehicle line up to the party. The 2017 Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle returns to the green carpet. As one of the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles, the Toyota Mirai is a four-door, midsize sedan with performance that fully competes with traditional internal combustion engines – but uses no gasoline. Instead, Mirai creates electricity on demand using hydrogen, oxygen and a fuel cell, and emits nothing but water vapor in the process. Lexus is excited to showcase its all-new hybrid luxury sedan, the LS 500h. With smooth power and an estimated 33 miles per gallon on the highway, it has a range of more than 600 miles of luxurious driving. On sale in February 2018 with a starting price around $80,000, the LS 500h will be the luxury sedan of choice for environmentally minded drivers.
Prius, which means “to go before,” changed the way we move about the world and changed the automotive industry forever. More than two decades and ten million Toyota & Lexus hybrid sales later, we continue to improve how we move on the drive towards a more sustainable future. Congratulations to tonight’s Environmental Media Awards nominees and special honorees, and we thank you for leading us all to a brighter tomorrow. Sincerely, Bob Carter, Executive Vice President – Sales, Toyota Motor North America

Welcome to the 27th Annual EMA Awards! I have been privileged to steer this amazing organization for almost two decades…. and through all our triumphs and disappointments, I think it's safe to say nothing has ever been like this year! Despite all the noise, one thing has become clearer than ever: the need for one unified voice educating the nation and the globe about the dangers of turning our back on the environment and the importance of investing in the future of our planet! Unity and positivity are EMA’s voice. The country is divided and we, as environmentalists are divided in our approach. But, we have one common goal: To create a sustainable economy and a safe earth for our children and grandchildren. That’s our job. We must be positive, and we must come together. Debbie Levin EMA President
Which is why tonight is so important; tonight, we truly have a cross section of action and solutions. We have icons of industry, role models for the next generation and leaders of the future.
This event and our organization were founded amidst the hope of a new age in education. In 1989, we were an embattled nation as a reactionary regime threatened to undercut a dedicated environmental agenda. But if there is one thing these many years and administrative cycles have taught us, it's all about “us.” Every one of us has the power to effect change. In our homes, in our communities, and in the choices we make every day. It's up to us to protect the future. It's up to us to protect our families. From contaminated water, proliferated fossil fuels, genetically modified foods, floods, fires, melting ice caps, killing off species that had lived on our planet for hundreds of thousands of years before humans walked the Earth, we have seen the adverse effects of our choices. We are the caretakers of Earth. We are mothers and fathers and grandparents, sisters and brothers, sons and daughters. And with this great power, comes even greater responsibility.
In this time of great adversity, our planet needs heroes. And tonight, we most certainly have them. Business icon, humanitarian, activist and former Mayor of my hometown, Mr. Michael Bloomberg is a real-world superhero. Mr. Bloomberg’s importance to our planet is immeasurable. He has bravely put his own persona and finances on the front lines of the green movement, as UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change and Chair of the C40 Climate Leadership Group. And as Mayor of New York, Mr. Bloomberg dedicated 20 Billion Dollars to protect NYC against the effects of climate change. And, stepping in where our President walked away, to fund and support the Paris Climate Agreement. We’re so proud Mr. Bloomberg is our 2017 recipient of the EMA Lifetime Achievement Award. We have been watching Natalie Portman exemplify elegance and intellect since she was a young girl. Everything Mrs. Portman does, from acting to activism, is thoughtful, powerful and resonates through her global influence. Embracing a plant based diet as a preteen, Mrs. Portman has always been a mindful resident of planet Earth. For the last decade, she has used her powerful voice to advocate for micro financing, a call to Harvard and other Universities to divest from coal, gas and oil companies and her support for the conscious food movement that can motivate and educate generations. We’re so thrilled to be recognizing Academy Award Winner Natalie Portman with the 2017 EMA’s Ongoing Commitment Award. Russell Simmons. People throw around terms like innovator, groundbreaker, disruptor. I think it’s safe to say Mr. Simmons is all those words and more. From his days changing the face of music to creating a platform for comedy and spoken word and reimagining streetwear in the last three decades, Mr. Simmons has blazed a path for the many moguls to come after. But what truly makes Mr. Simmons stand head and shoulders above other entertainment luminaries in his fields of business is his ability to learn, pivot and imagine authentic, new directions for himself and his worldwide fans. In the past decade, Mr. Simmons has used his endlessly engaged brain to tune in and turn on his business ventures to the world of spiritual sustainability and championing a vegan lifestyle; with a healthy dose of meditation. Our 2017 EMA Missions in Music Honoree has used his “humble” beginnings as a music impresario to change the way we live, eat and respect our planet. Speaking of total disruption, our next Honoree created his legendary brand by breaking the rules of sales, packaging, and marketing. The quintessential American success story, John Paul DeJoria went from sleeping in his car and selling products out of his trunk to
changing the face of hair products, inventing the modern rules of branding. Mr. DeJoria dared to dream of a better kind of tequila when he co-founded Patron Spirits. Along with taste and quality, Mr. DeJoria wanted Patron to be dedicated to sustainable farming. Which is why for almost three decades, Patron has been the global leader in sustainable spirits. Through it all, Mr. DeJoria has believed in personal responsibility and investing in the future of humankind, wildlife, and the planet. Most notably, chasing away poachers as an active member of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and through his personal philanthropic work through the JP’s Peace, Love & Happiness Foundation. It is for all these reasons and more that we are honored to give JP the 2017 Global Innovator Award. We all love the Montage Hotels and Resorts. The luxury, the impeccable service, the world class, exquisite on site restaurants. But what many of you may not know is that they are the most sustainable hotel group in the US and abroad. Alan Fuerstman, Founder and CEO of the incredible Montage International has been a lifelong advocate for better business practices and sustainable innovation. I first learned of the inspirational business practices of Mr. Fuerstman and his collection of Five Diamond hotels nearly a decade ago when I was invited to preview the now iconic Montage Beverly Hills. I just couldn’t believe that a hotel as beautiful as the Montage Beverly Hills could also be Gold LEED certified. In the years since opening Beverly Hills, The Montage has continued to lead the way in a dedication for sustainable practices in the hospitality space and are now including the same initiatives across their entire hotel and resort portfolio, making the company an international role model. Not only is Mr. Fuerstman and his Montage International Hotels and Resorts collection a shining example of how to create sophisticated vacation experiences while remaining dedicated to protecting the planet, they are now an active partner of our organization. Beginning earlier this year, EMA and The Montage Beverly Hills began a multi-year partnership hosting the spring EMA IMPACT Summit. And moving forward, EMA and The Montage Hotels and Resorts will launch several sustainability programs on the corporate as well as consumer facing sides. Our work together has made The Montage Beverly Hills, EMA’s very first EMA Green Seal Recipient for Hospitality. We are honored to give Mr. Alan Fuerstman and Montage International, the 2017 EMA Corporate Responsibility Award! With our world in daily flux, loyalty and sustainability are something that’s in our DNA. We respect and support our relationships as authentic cheerleaders for our corporate partners as well as our Board. When EMA is “in,” we’re IN. That’s because we don’t open that door unless the partner is as dedicated and fearless in the pursuit of a sustainable future as we are. 17 years and going, Toyota Motor Sales and EMA are linked, not only by the success of the “now” iconic Toyota Prius, but connected with the authentic desire to move forward and be the cleanest automobile company in the world. Our mutual respect and excitement for innovation bond us.
We continue to be so proud to be a small part of that history in helping bring awareness to the Hollywood community. And, the coolest looking, technologically advanced and comfy cars created. Our relationships, pushing two decades, Mike Sullivan and his beautiful team at LAcarGUY Family of Dealerships are family to us. Kathy Kellogg Johnson with Kellogg Garden Products and Jason Waggoner at Star Waggons, Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks at ECOS, Calvert Research and Investments, Bona, and Clover Sonoma and of course Montage International. As well as all our dear new friends, Biossance, John Paul Mitchell Systems, Patron and Tetra Pak. We’re so proud and honored to have this organic and locally sourced vegetarian and vegan (elegant) sensationally delicious dinner. We thank our Chef, Akasha Richmond (Akasha, AR Cucina). Akasha is simply in a class of their own. And of course, afore mentioned JUST Water. We were all introduced and awed by our Host for the evening after he received the EMA Futures Award last year. From that night, in fact, from the moment he came backstage after his honor, EMA has been taken by a lightning bolt, Jaden Smith. His passion, intelligence, pure, individual artistry across the board envelops every moment of his crazy busy life. Environmental global responsibility is his calling. He has dived into the role as the voice of his generation as one of our most innovative and hands on Executive Directors on our Board. And I just adore him. EMA is a Board that’s a family. We’re so excited to honor this year’s tremendous slate of nominees. Each helps teach and motivate their audience with such different visions and tones through their creative expression. Our artists this year prove that there are many approaches to our global issues and narrative ways to inspire. As EMA was created as an organization to educate, the willingness of all of you in the entertainment industry to assist is essential; the passion for our message we receive from the media community is so gratifying. We thank you all for your work all year and for your time supporting EMA this evening. Warmest regards, Debbie Levin, President & CEO EMA

Last year we laid out our ambitious plans to be the voice of innovation, optimism, and solutions in the environmental conversation. Though the conversation is long from over, our messaging is not only being heard by billions; it’s resonating and inspiring action. We believe people are getting bad news fatigue and our optimistic voice is giving them hope. Like never before, the environmental conversation is shifting from scorched earth to “we have the power to change things for the better.” From the overwhelming amount of companies and cities that have pledged to go 100% renewable energy to the ubiquity of eco-friendly products in stores, we know our messaging is working. That being said, it’s urgent that we use our vast network to be louder than ever before and champion solutions. We’re thrilled to share with you all of the incredible events and initiatives we’ve accomplished this year.
EMA Awards The 26th Annual Environmental Media Awards were held under the stars on New York Street at Warner Bros. Studios. The show, presented by Toyota, Lexus, and Calvert Investments, was hosted by Board Member Nicole Richie. With a focus on the future of environmental messaging and activism, the show Honored Jaden Smith and Shailene Woodley the Male and Female EMA Futures Awards, Moby the Missions in Music Award, Robyn O’Brien the Green Parent Award, and United Nations PRI the Corporate Responsibility Award. The Awards were a massive success with two billion press impressions and an additional 50+ million impressions on social media. The evening’s dinner was prepared by James Beard Award Winning Chefs Jon & Vinny.
IMPACT Summit and Program EMA launched its first annual EMA IMPACT Summit this Spring. The two-day business summit, presented by Toyota Mirai, Montage Beverly Hills, and Calvert Research and Management, focused on impact investing and innovation. The Summit included keynote speeches by Van Jones, John Paul DeJoria, Mayor Eric Garcetti and others with panel discussions, and breakout sessions for a very packed and inspirational two days. Both days ended with the New Pacific Realty Future Innovator of the Year Challenge, which was won by Thread International. The event was a huge success with over one billion media impressions, bringing much-needed attention to environmental solutions. In true EMA fashion, we enlisted the influence of Hollywood and the creativity of the tech and business worlds to produce something unique. The fun and informative event was unlike any other business conference. Where else can you find celebrities networking with investors and innovators in between world-class panels and keynotes? Our goal was to bring attention to solutions, and thanks to our amazing speakers, sponsors and attendees, we accomplished that. IMPACT started a much-needed conversation about how we can save our planet through investment and innovation. EMA partnered with Calvert Research and Management for an ongoing monthly article discussing how people can do well by doing good through impact investing. The articles appeared in EMA’s monthly newsletters.
Standing Rock EMA stood in solidarity with the water protectors at Standing Rock. President & CEO Debbie Levin joined Board Members Frances Fisher, Ray Halbritter, Daryl Hannah, Bryn Mooser, Dawn Olivieri, Nikki Reed, Ian Somerhalder, John Streur, John Quigley, and Shailene Woodley in North Dakota to call for a stop in the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. In addition to participating in the peaceful protests, EMA hosted speaker panels that were live-streamed on RYOT News’ Facebook page.
EMA Messaging In partnership with LineupMedia.fm, EMA launched the Environmental Media Network. The Network consists of the two podcasts, Going Green With Asher Levin and Organic Lunch With Debbie Levin. Both shows feature interviews with EMA’s celebrity Board Members as well as other green icons, activists, and scientists. Interviews included Board Members Lance Bass, Ed Begley, Jr., Philippe Cousteau, Frances Fisher, Wendie Malick, Darby Stanchfield, Constance Zimmer and 2015 EMA Awards Honoree Moby. EMA Board Members and other influential names in the entertainment industry, such as Robert Redford and Elle Fanning, called for the protection of our nation's wild horses and burros. The letter to Congress, spearheaded by Board Member Wendie Malick, was signed by EMA President and CEO Debbie Levin along with Board Members Lance Bass, Hart Bochner, Frances Fisher, Ian Somerhalder, Amber Valletta, Kimberly Van Der Beek, and Daryl Wein. EMA Board Member Blythe Danner joined forces with EMA in calling on EPA Director Scott Pruitt to ban harmful pesticides and herbicides such as glyphosate. Blythe’s passionate op-ed appeared in TIME motto. EMA President & CEO Debbie Levin appeared on the millennial-focused podcast Get Caught Up With Tis and Tiff to discuss the importance of younger voices in the environmental movement.
EMA Green Seal Green productions are quickly becoming the norm in the entertainment industry because it makes sense for both the budget and the planet. In 2017, we more than doubled the number of productions in a year (over 100!) receiving our EMA Green Seal! Now, we are taking this successful model and implementing it in the hospitality industry. We are so excited to expand our 15 year young program by honoring our great friends at Montage International for all of their hotels and resorts’ efforts with our first EMA Green Seal for Hospitality.
Healthy Family EMA joined family-owned dairy company Clover Sonoma, actress Jordana Brewster, NBA All-Star Baron Davis, and EMA Board Members Amy Smart & Carter Oosterhouse to create a call-to-action Non-GMO PSA titled It’s Up to Us, with a goal to inspire individuals and families to use their voice and demand more non-GMO options at whichever grocery store they patronize. The video received over 300K views in its first month. EMA launched the It’s Up to Us PSA on social media and at our favorite family-friendly, EMA Green Seal Restaurant Au Fudge. The event, which features yummy Clover Dairy inspired snacks and drinks, brings together friends, press, and concerned parents to help raise awareness for the need for more non-GMO products. For our first school garden of 2017, our 9 year old #GreenMySchool Program began with longtime Board Member Constance Zimmer. Constance returned to her roots to build a school garden at the Heritage Museum of Orange County, CA. Dozens of bright-eyed students got their hands dirty in organic soil with Constance to grow a variety of vegetables and fruits in four raised garden beds. The amazing students of Hector Godinez Fundamental High School and the Mitchell School, Kellogg Garden Supplies, and the Heritage Museum OC made the day possible. EMA continued its #GreenMySchool program with Caruso and Kellogg Garden Products breaking ground right in Pan Pacific Park in the Mid Wilshire area of LA. EMA Board Members & long-time EMA garden mentors Amy Smart, Sarah Wright Olsen, Anna Anissimova, and our new friend Aidan Gallagher, joined the fifth graders at Hancock Park Elementary to build a pollinator garden.
Host Jaden Smith is making his mark in Hollywood as a fashion icon, talented actor, and musician. Jaden Smith made his big screen acting debut in “The Pursuit of Happyness” in 2006. Starring opposite his father, Jaden won an MTV Movie Award in 2007 for “Breakthrough Performance” as well as universal acclaim for his nuanced and heartwarming performance. Other film credits include "The Day the Earth Stood Still," the box office hit "The Karate Kid", and "After Earth." In music, Jaden dropped his latest album "Cool Tapes Vol. 2" in November 2014 exclusively on his new app Jaden Experience. The app is the first to be released in a new platform that allows artists to distribute their music directly to their fans creating an album-like experience through a dedicated platform. His first mixtape, “The Cool Café,” was released in 2012. Jaden also hosts his own program on Apple Music’s Beats 1 radio show. Jaden’s greatest endeavor has been starting his own clothing/lifestyle brand called MSFTSrep. The clothes range from hoodies and T-shirts to trousers and vests. Jaden is currently the face of Louis Vuitton and was last seen in Baz Luhrmann’s music-driven Netflix period drama “The Get Down.” Next up, Jaden will star in the upcoming film “Life in a Year” alongside Cara Delevingne.
Jaden is an advocate for a cleaner world and was recently honored for his
Host leadership and action on environmental issues at the 2016 EMA Awards with the “Male EMA Futures Award.” Jaden recently co-founded JUST Water, the most environmentally conscious water bottle sold commercially. The ethically sourced 100% spring water comes in a paper bottle that reduces harmful greenhouse gas emissions by up to 74% when compared to traditional PET plastic water bottles. Additionally, the water is sourced in Glens Falls in Upstate New York where a unique trade partnership with the city is revitalizing the local community, restoring industry there by proving jobs and protecting the watershed. Jaden is a Co-founder of recently started JUST Impact - a 501c3 focused on galvanizing direly needed early-stage funding for clean tech startups mitigating climate change. The charity works closely with and was a founding grantor of The Prime Coalition - a similar non-profit founded by Sarah Kearney ( MIT’13) while she was attending The Sloan School of Business at MIT. Notably, JUST Impact and The Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation made a recent Program Related Investment in Anfiro - a radically new reverse osmosis filtration membrane startup coming out of a MIT (Jaime Mateus). This breakthrough technology will significantly reduce energy load and cost in existing reverse osmosis technology making it more affordable for new groups to gain access to potable water.

A native of Queens, NY, Simmons has two daughters, Ming Lee and Aoki Lee.
John Paul DeJoria’s rags-to-riches biography exemplifies the American dream. Once homeless, he has struggled against the odds to achieve success, launching multiple global enterprises, while always supporting his motto, “Success Unshared is Failure.” In 1980, John Paul and hairstylist Paul Mitchell converted a partially borrowed $700 into John Paul Mitchell Systems, which is today the largest privately held salon hair care line. In 1989, he co-founded Patrón, the first ultra-premium tequila, and now the world’s number one ultra-premium tequila. John Paul went on to co-found John Paul Pet, ROK Mobile and AuBio Life Sciences—like his previous ventuĮres, they are privately held companies with high ethical standards and reputations for inteĮgrity. Throughout the length of his success, John Paul has made philanthropy paramount. In 2011, he signed Bill Gates and Warren Buffet’s “The Giving Pledge” as a formal promise to continue giving back, and also established JP’s Peace, Love & Happiness Foundation as a hub for his charitable investments, which span the core values of his companies: sustainability, social responsibility and animalfriendliness.
John Paul DeJoria
A commitment to caring for the planet and its people is a driving force in everything JP does. He launched Grow Appalachia in 2009—an organization that
aims to empower hunger-stricken people of Appalachia by providing skills and resources to grow organic, nutritious food and teach them how to prepare and preserve it in a healthy way. He supports Waterkeeper Alliance and rainforest conservation and reforestation projects through an alliance with Reforest’Action, for which he has committed to plant 750,000 trees by the end of 2019 through the John Paul Mitchell Systems “Rooted in Green” project. The Hacienda del Patrón distillery has earned a clean industry award from the Mexican Federal Environmental Protection Agency for the company’s efforts to reduce waste, clean the air, and sustain the environment, and every bottle is handmade from recycled glass. DeJoria also has a long-standing relationship with Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. He is an advisory board member, and traveled to the Gulf of St. Lawrence with the organization to stand against the Canadian Seal Hunt in 1998 and the M/V John Paul DeJoria, a 110-foot boat, joined the organization’s fleet in 2017, and has already embarked on its first initiative, an antishark finning mission. John Paul has been profiled for his corporate and philanthropic initiatives across a multitude of media outlets including 20/20, CNN, Forbes, Fortune, Inc., and Fox, Fox Business News, Bloomberg, CNBC and NBC, and recently appeared as a mentor for budding entrepreneurs via a guest shark appearance on Shark Tank.

Akasha Richmond settled into the life of a chef quite by accident, and has flourished in this role to become one of Los Angeles’s celebrated culinary names. After moving to LA however many years ago to further her studies in yoga, Akasha, a self-taught chef and baker, began to work at the yogi-owned Golden Temple, a celebrated vegetarian restaurant popular in the 1990s amongst Hollywood’s health-conscious elite. She decided to pursue cooking fulltime, and through her work at the restaurant befriended cultural icons such as Michael Jackson, who launched her career as a personal chef, during which she also worked with Barbara Streisand and Billy Bob Thornton. Her experiences and recipes from her time with these celebrities culminated in the publishing of her first cookbook, Hollywood Dish, in 2006.
Richmond has established herself as a celebrated culinary talent and opened her first concept AKASHA in 2008. AR Cucina, an Italian inspired restaurant opened in 2016. She places emphasis on the importance of eating local foods utilizing health conscious cooking methods, sustainable practices and dedication to authentic ingredients and products that are sustainable and organic. A longstanding affinity for cuisines from around globe, Richmond has traveled the world taking inspiration back to her kitchen from Southeast Asia, Bali, Australia, as well as Eastern and Western Europe. When she is not in her restaurants, she travels as much as possible, frequently curating and leading small groups on culinary and cultural excursions to Italy and India.

The EMA Green Seal is a recognition program honoring progress in sustainable production. We have recently expanded to hospitality and corporations. As the only environmental nonprofit working within the entertainment industry to motivate through role modeling, the Environmental Media Association, created the Program to both promote sustainable production methods and identify those in the industry who’ve made a significant effort to reduce their production’s environmental impact. Our Program honors film and television productions as well as award shows, galas, and restaurants. The Program’s criteria cover all facets of a production to provide a practical, comprehensive guide to environmentally responsible filmmaking and event planning. In each area of focus, the criteria include specific environmental actions in order to help producers focus their greening efforts.
